1 dead, 1 injured in separate shootings on highways near downtown Columbus

The shootings took place less than 10 hours of each other.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — One person is dead and another is injured after two separate shootings on highways near downtown Columbus, according to police. The shootings took place less than 10 hours of each other.

The first shooting occurred on Interstate 670 East at North 4th Street Friday evening, just after 5 p.m.

The victim of the shooting, identified by police as 52-year-old Bret Bennett, was taken to Grant Medical Center and later pronounced dead. Police said the shooting appeared to have been the result of road rage.

The suspect vehicle, a black Ford F-150, fled the scene but was located on Saturday.

Police have arrested 37-year-old Tony Brock in connection to the fatal shooting. 

According to Franklin County Municipal Court documents, while locating the truck, Brock, through his attorney, contacted detectives and admitted that he was the person who fired the handgun and killed Bennett.

The second incident happened early Saturday morning, just before 2:40 a.m. Officers were called to the area of Interstate 71 and I-670 on reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found one person suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim told officers that they were in their vehicle when they were struck by gunfire from an unknown person.

Additional details have not yet been released.

The victim was taken to Grant Medical Center. Police said they are expected to survive their injuries.
