Community working with police as search continues for suspect connected to death of 13-year-old in North Linden

“When it happens to a 13-year-old boy, it heightens the fear that these people in these communities are going to feel,” Doris Rodriguez, a community activist, said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It's been a little more than a week since Columbus police found 13-year-old Angel Diaz shot and killed in North Linden.

The community continues to work with police to help get the family answers and justice as they search for a suspect.

Tuesday night, members of the community gathered in Linden to door knock and pass out flyers from Columbus police. They wanted to spread the word and see if anyone had any security camera or doorbell footage from the night of April 14 between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Columbus police are also looking for the person who was driving a Gray 2008-2012 Ford Escape. They believe the occupants may have witnessed the incident connected to Diaz’s death, which happened near the 1300 block of E. Hudson Street.

"We hit two or three streets, and we were literally just going door to door. Some people came out to speak with us, others were not home. We were out there for about an hour and a half just talking to different people in the community trying to get the word out,” Travecia Franklin, a community activist, said.

"People are concerned. We know that this is an issue already in this community, but when it happens to a 13-year-old boy, it heightens the fear that these people in these communities are going to feel,” Doris Rodriguez, a community activist, said.

Rodriguez is an English as a second language teacher. She was requested to be there Tuesday afternoon to support their efforts in reaching out to the Latino community about the investigation, and for people to know there is someone in their corner to help.

"I think it's really important for there to be a face for the community to see that it is OK to speak up, it is OK to reach out and there will be somebody there to listen to their stories or to listen to their concerns which is a major issue that they already face. Not being able to go to the police because there might not be a police officer who speaks Spanish or somebody to translate for them,” Rodriguez said.

If anyone has any information regarding this homicide investigation, they can contact Columbus police or submit it anonymously to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers by calling 614-461-8477.
