18-year-old charged in deadly shooting at northwest Columbus apartment complex

Columbus police said Manuel Perez-Cajete was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An 18-year-old man is charged with murder after a 38-year-old man was fatally shot at an apartment complex in northwest Columbus on Tuesday.

Around 10:30 a.m., officers with the Columbus Division of Police responded to a report of someone with a gun at the Island Club Apartments located between Bethel and West Case roads.

Police said one person suffering from a gunshot wound was located inside an apartment. The victim, identified as Gilbert Contera-Ramirez, was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Circumstances surrounding what led up to the shooting remain unclear. Police said two males were seen running from the scene.

Columbus police said Manuel Perez-Cajete was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder. He appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Thursday and his bond was set for $2 million. 

Police did not say whether detectives are searching for other suspects in this case.
