Bond set at $1 million for suspect charged in north Columbus deadly shooting

Police have not identified the victim.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man is dead and a suspect is in custody after a shooting on the city's north side on Thursday, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

Police said a call came in around 5 a.m. for shots fired at The Trails at Arbor Court apartment complex on Belcher Drive. Officers searched the area but didn't find anything.

Just before 8:15 a.m., another call came in for a report of a dead body. Officers found an unresponsive man, later identified as 24-year-old Yahya Mohamed. He was pronounced dead at 8:19 a.m.

Police arrested 19-year-old Jevin Campbell in connection to the shooting. Campbell is charged with murder.

Police said that during an investigation, it was determined that Campbell intervened in the theft of a vehicle when Mohamed was shot.

During court on Friday, a Franklin County prosecutor said "He (Campbell) witnessed a female neighbor in an altercation with a John Doe over an attempted theft of a motor vehicle. Mr. Campbell, the defendant, intervened. When the John Doe fled, the defendant gave chase. He produced a pistol and fired multiple shots at John Doe, striking him, causing his death."

Campbell is being held on a $1 million bond.

This is the city's first reported homicide of 2024. Anyone with information in this case can call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at (614) 645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
