COLUMBUS, Ohio — Detectives with the Columbus Division of Police have ruled that the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy in July was accidental and self-inflicted.

The shooting happened on July 11 on Gerbert Road around 9 p.m.

Officers responded and found Marcus Peters shot. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said there were four teens, including Peters, inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Police said the teens were playing with guns and ammunition.

That included putting gas on the rounds and setting them on fire, watching them to see when they would go off.

Police said Peters was encouraged to drop the magazine, put the gun to his head and pull the trigger.

Police never recovered the gun.

As officers were on scene that night, there were three large brawls in the street. One person was arrested and three weapons were recovered.
