NWS confirms 2 tornadoes touched down in western Ohio early Saturday

On Friday night, a strong system brought severe weather across the Midwest region.

TROY, Ohio — The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes touched down in western Ohio early Saturday.

On Friday night, a strong system brought severe weather across the Midwest region. The strongest line of storms and the greatest risk of severe weather arrived overnight between the hours of 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.

In Miami County, a tornado was confirmed to have touched down around Troy shortly after 1 a.m., according to NWS.

NWS says they are working to gather data, but they believe the tornado was likely at the high end of an EF0 or the low end of an EF1.

EF0 tornadoes fall between 65 and 85 mph, while EF1, a moderate tornado, often fall between 86 and 110 mph.

Another tornado occurred in Auglaize County between Wapakoneta and Uniopolis, NWS confirmed.

The EF1 tornado was on the ground for more than 10 minutes and had an estimated wind speed of 110 mph. It touched down in the early morning hours and had a path length of 17.2 miles, according to NWS.

Damage was first discovered on Owl Creek Road. Two large trees were knocked down and a barn was destroyed at two separate residences.

As the tornado strengthened and moved northeast, it removed a large portion of a warehouse building roof and snapped several power poles. It also leveled a large commercial greenhouse.

After crossing the intersection of U.S. Route 33 and Interstate 75, the tornado caused roof damage and the partial collapse of an industrial building's external wall - this was when the tornado was at its strongest, NWS says.

Along its path, a truck stop was damaged and semi-trailers were blown over. A private campground also had numerous trailers flipped over, injuring seven people.

A historic brick school building was destroyed on Brown Road before the tornado reportedly lifted near the Auglaize/Allen County line.

This story will be updated when more information is made available.
