NWS says Indian Lake hit with EF3 tornado; 8 tornadoes in Ohio total so far

Eight tornadoes in total hit the state, including in Mercer, Licking, Logan, Crawford and Richland counties.

LOGAN COUNTY, Ohio — The National Weather Service confirmed eight tornadoes hit Ohio, including a powerful EF3 that killed at least three people and leveled homes and businesses in Logan County Thursday night.

Logan County

The NWS said an EF3 tornado struck Lakeview, which is on the southwest side of Indian Lake. This is the same tornado that hit the Orchard Island area, about three miles east of Lakeview, as a high-end EF2.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office said at least three people were killed and first responders are searching through debris to find other possible victims.

Specific details on the tornado, such as max wind speeds and how long it was on the ground, will be released at a later time.

Crawford and Richland counties

The NWS said an EF2 tornado struck Crawford and Richland counties at 7:54 p.m. The tornado began along Marsh Road in Crawford County, causing damage to trees and homes. It increased intensity along Kenestrick Road and damaged more homes and buildings before entering Richland County. The tornado was on the ground for just over 10 miles with max wind speeds at 120 mph.

Darke and Miami counties

An EF2 tornado was confirmed in Darke and Miami counties that hit the areas around 7:09 p.m. Thursday. NWS says the tornado caused EF1 damage in Darke County and EF2 damage in northwestern Miami County. The tornado is believed to have crossed into Darke County from Randolph County in Indiana. Further details on the tornado will be released at a later time.

Union County

NWS said an EF2 tornado touched down in Union County near Broadway. Further details on the tornado will be released at a later time.

Licking County

An EF1 tornado was also confirmed in Licking County, just north of Johnstown. Details on the tornado will be released at a later time.

The Licking County Sheriff's Office said no injuries have been reported, but the damage is in the northwestern part of the county.

Two tornadoes in Mercer County

An EF1 tornado was also confirmed near the Indiana border in Mercer County. A separate EF1 tornado hit Mercer and Auglaize counties. Details on that tornado were also not available Friday afternoon.

Hancock County

The NWS office in Cleveland confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down in Hancock County.

NWS crews are also set to survey damage in Delaware County.

In Ohio’s Huron County, emergency officials posted on Facebook that there was a “confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado” near Plymouth, some 75 miles northeast of Indian Lake.

The storms also caused damage in Indiana, Kentucky and Arkansas.
