MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Knox County is mourning the loss of former sheriff David Barber.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office said Barber was found deceased Sunday at his home from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The office issued a statement on Facebook about the former sheriff's passing:

"We are sad to report the death of retired Sheriff David Barber. He was discovered today at his residence. Our condolences to his family."

Barber garnered national attention in 2010 after the high-profile murders of Tina Hermann, Kody Maynard, and Stephanie Sprang and abduction of Sarah Maynard. Barber's office lead the investigation that later convicted Matthew Hoffman for those crimes. Hoffman is currently serving a life sentence.

Barber served as sheriff in Knox County from 1993-2013.

Sheriff Shaffer says the investigation into Barber's death continues.
