Man fatally shot at east Columbus apartment identified

The Columbus Division of Police's Homicide Unit is investigating claims of self-defense.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police has identified the man who was fatally shot outside of an apartment on the city’s east side Sunday morning.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex located in the 5400 block of Red Bird Court, off Noe Bixby Road, shortly before 6 a.m.

Upon arrival, police found 30-year-old Nathaniel Spears suffering from a gunshot wound in front of the building. Spears was taken to Mount Carmel East in critical condition where he later died.

A lieutenant told 10TV at the scene that Spears and an unidentified person got into an altercation. The person then shot Spears, drove down the street, called police and waited for officers to arrive. 

The Columbus Division of Police's Homicide Unit is investigating claims of self-defense. When the investigation is complete, it will be handed to the Franklin County Grand Jury for final review and consideration, according to police.

Columbus police detained and questioned somebody, but said at this time no one has been arrested.
