Woman Charged With Robbing Sawmill Road Bank

The FBI says a woman suspected of robbing a bank last September is now in custody.

The FBI announced on Monday that it has identified the woman who robbed a northwest side banklast September.

Detectives filed robbery charges against Melissa D. Smith, of Lewis Center.

According to investigators, Smith, 34, robbed Key Bank, located at 7460 Sawmill Rd., on Sept.15.

A tip led detectives to file charges against Smith, the FBI said.

Smith is being held at the Franklin County Jail, according to the FBI.

Investigators said that a woman entered the bank and passed a note to the teller, demandingmoney and threatening to hurt her if she did not comply.  No weapon was seen, but the tellerhanded over cash and the woman fled.

Witnesses said they last saw her running toward a nearby condominium complex.

The bank teller told authorities that the woman had what appeared to be red stains on her hands,possibly from a dye pack that exploded during a previous robbery.
