The southwest Ohio city hit by a tornado this week doesn't use sirens to warn residents about severe weather, but officials say such an alert might not have been much help because the twister struck quickly and unexpectedly.
The National Weather Service confirmed a relatively weak EF-1 tornado with winds up to 105 mph touched down Tuesday at a Beavercreek shopping plaza.
It lifted at least five cars, damaged business and injured two people who were in vehicles rolled by the storm. The winds also downed trees and ripped roofing from homes in a nearby subdivision.
The Greene County Emergency Management Agency director tells the Dayton Daily News that assessing the costs of the damage could take six months or more as people make repairs and file insurance claims.
