Cash App and Square 'steadily' recovering after hours-long outages

Cash App users complained of error messages when trying to send or receive money, and some businesses couldn't process Square payments all day Thursday.

WASHINGTON — Cash App experienced a system outage Thursday into early Friday affecting multiple features in the peer-to-peer money sharing app, preventing some from accessing their money. The payment processing app Square was also down Thursday.

Square and Cash App share the same parent company, Block.

“Since around noon PT (3pm ET) on Thursday, sellers have been unable to access accounts or process payments due to a systems outage within Square,” Square wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, shortly before 7am ET Friday. “We know you trust us with your business, and these situations add challenges to running your operations. For that, we are truly sorry.”

In a later update to its online status portal, Square said that its services were “steadily regaining their functionality” Friday morning.

Cash App similarly reported some service recovery Friday. As of around 7:30 a.m. ET, Cash App said that customers could once again add cash, make purchases with their Cash Card and buy Bitcoin. But not all services had fully returned yet.

“We're continuing to get the ability to send payments and cash out back up and running,” Cash App wrote on its status page Friday morning. On Thursday night, the payment service urged those experiencing issues to “not reattempt any actions such as sending and receiving payments.”

Users on social media complained of being unable to unlock their Cash App debit cards or seeing error messages when attempting to send money. Others said their businesses were unable to use the app to run credit card payments using Square, or even access appointments made through the platform to inform customers.

In updates posted to its website, Cash App urged users not to reattempt any payments or deposits that showed error messages, and said users should not log out of the app, but did not say why.

"We can assure you that Cash App isn't hacked," the app's account replied to another user on X.

In June, a glitch caused some Cash App customers to be double charged for purchases or payments, in some cases dropping their accounts into a negative balance. Users were eventually refunded.
