Zanesville ice cream shop to be featured on Food Network

Tom's Ice Cream Bowl will be featured in a new show on the Food Network.

A Zanesville ice cream shop will soon be the star of a national reality show.

Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl will be featured on the Food Network’s newest show, “Ice Cream Nation."

“The tradition here is amazing. You wouldn't believe how many people from out of state come through here,” said Rusty Montgomery. “[I] usually I eat here on Wednesdays.”

Tom’s has been a Zanesville staple since 1948. The popular ice cream and sandwich shop was named after its owner Tom Mirgon. In 1984, Mirgon retired and Bill Sullivan took over as owner.

"He sold it to me because he knew I wouldn't change it," said Sullivan. "The only things we change are the flavors of the ice cream."

Tom's still has its traditional 1950s decor, table and chairs. Waiters still wear aprons and bow ties when serving.

Sullivan says the restaurant features new flavors based on popularity and request.

"People's diets change," said Sullivan. "So, one thing we did do is add sorbets. Sorbet is low in fat, they have no dairy for people that are lactose intolerant. We have a few sugar free flavors too."

Ice Cream Nation will air on the Food Network on July 21.
