Westerville police rescue 2 ducklings trapped in storm drain

The officers took the ducklings over to the mother duck at a nearby yard and they were reunited.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Three Westerville Division of Police officers rescued a pair of ducklings who fell into a storm drain on Monday.

According to police, officers were notified by the Rotary Club of Westerville about two ducklings stuck in a storm drain. Officers Jon Baer, Maddie Muncie and TJ Ryan arrived to help rescue the baby ducks.

Body camera video shows one officer speaking with two women about the ducklings around 8:30 a.m. The mother duck can be seen lurking and quacking in the background as the officers try to figure out how to get the ducklings out of the drain.

Officers tried for several minutes to lift the manhole cover but had no luck.

After a while, the officers tried to get the ducklings out by attaching a small bag to a stick. The goal was to have the ducklings get into the bag and the officers would lift them to the top of the cover and they would be able to get them out by hand.

After about 15 minutes, one duckling was rescued. The second duckling was rescued a few minutes later.

The officers took the ducklings over to the mother duck at a nearby yard and they were reunited.
