Sheriff: 1 dead in fiery crash after tanker truck goes over bridge in northeast Ohio

EPA officials told 10TV’s sister station in Cleveland WKYC that the tanker was carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — One person was killed in a fiery crash in northeast Ohio Saturday morning, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and officers with the Macedonia Police Department were called to the Interstate 271 north ramp in Northfield Center Township for a report of a traffic crash. When they arrived, deputies determined that a tanker truck carrying diesel had been traveling northbound on state Route 8 and attempted to get on I-271 when the truck lost control.

The sheriff's office release says the truck went over the side of the bridge, landing on the northbound lanes of Route 8. It then burst into flames.

Local fire departments were called to assist as well as a HAZMAT Team in Summit County.

The driver of the tanker truck died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Summit Metro Parks shared that they are working with the Environmental Protection Agency after diesel spilled into Rock Creek at Furnace Run Metro Park.

EPA officials told 10TV’s sister station in Cleveland WKYC that the tanker was carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel. WKYC reports that the creek briefly caught fire after the crash.
