After spending 15 days in a local hospital being treated for COVID-19, a Dublin teen is at home recovering and his friends and family say it happened with the help of complete strangers.

Dublin Jerome High School senior, Nick Butler, endured a tough fight against COVID-19 because he is immune-compromised. With hopes of increasing his chances of recovery, family and friends created a Facebook page with a specific purpose – find donors who have already recovered from COVID-19.

“We had no expectations that this would become a really critical way for the community and the donors and medical health professionals to come together,” family friend Erin Galloway said.

Galloway said the simply “ask” morphed into so much more. She tells 10TV the Facebook page received thousands of messages both by those willing to undergo the screening to donate and those wanting to share well wishes.

“It definitely increased the fighting spirit knowing that people were out there even strangers, who he will likely never meet, were cheering him on as much as his best friends.”

Galloway tells 10TV Butler was discharged from Nationwide Children’s Hospital Saturday morning following two plasma transfusions.

“He was able to have enough energy to be on his own after showing it for a period of time.”
