Ohio State student killed in apparent murder-suicide in north Columbus apartment

Heather Campbell was a psychology major from Strongsville, Ohio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police are investigating after two people were found dead in a north Columbus apartment.

Officers were called to Taylor House near the corner of Olentangy River Road and Bethel Road around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Columbus police said homicide detectives responded to the scene.

Sgt. David Sicilian said two people in their 20s, a man and a woman, were found dead in a first-floor apartment.

Police identified them as 22-year-old Heather Campbell and 25-year-old Kyle Lafferty.

"At this point it appears to be a murder-suicide," Sgt. Sicilian said.

Sgt. Sicilian said a friend of Campbell's went to check on her Sunday morning and then called police when she discovered the bodies.

Campbell and Lafferty were believed to be boyfriend and girlfriend according to Sgt. Sicilian.

Sgt. Sicilian told 10TV it appears Lafferty shot Campbell then later shot himself. Police are looking into when this happened.

Campbell was a student at Ohio State University. Alex Iammarino was a classmate of Campbell and said she was the friend everyone needed.

"Such a caring, inclusive individual. She truly was that unique person," Iammarino said.

The two went to middle, high and college together. He says Campbell attended Ohio State for two years before enlisting into the United States Navy.

Iammarino says he never met Lafferty, but the couple looked happy in pictures.

"Obviously, you don't know everything just from seeing it on social media. So, who knows what was really going on there," he said.
