State troopers on Monday released an 18-page report of the preliminary investigation into Lt. Rodney Osborne’s death.

ORIENT, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a corrections officer who was shot during a training session in Pickaway County earlier this month as a reckless homicide.

OSHP on Monday released an 18-page report of the preliminary investigation into Lt. Rodney Osborne’s death. The name of the person who is the subject of the investigation was redacted and they have not been charged.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections said one of its employees, a special operations commander, was placed on administrative leave on April 10 as the investigation continues.

The commander started as a correction officer at Warren Correctional Institution in May 2005. He has been in his current role since January 2021.

Additional information on the reckless homicide investigation was not immediately provided.

Osborne was fatally shot on April 9 during a training exercise at the Corrections Training Academy in Pickaway County.

OSHP said the shooting occurred at the tactical firing range, with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction calling it a “tragic accident.”

Osborne worked with the ODRC for 13 years and worked at the Southern Ohio Corrections Facility in Scioto County, according to ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith. Lt. Osborne was recently named employee of the year at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility where he was the commander of the Special Response Team.

He was laid to rest on April 15. Osborne leaves behind a wife, three children, a grandchild and many extended family.
