Suspect charged with murder in connection to man's death at Newark home

An autopsy revealed 43-year-old Joshua Hayes suffered internal bleeding from blunt force trauma to the body following a fight.

NEWARK, Ohio — A Newark man has been charged with murder in connection to another man's death last month.

Joshua Hayes, 43, died June 19 in Newark. 

Police and fire crews were initially called to a home on Isabelle Road for a possible drug overdose. Hayes was found inside was taken to Licking Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy revealed Hayes suffered internal bleeding from blunt force trauma to the body.

Detective Sergeant John Brnjic with Newark police said Hayes suffered the injures in a fight with 42-year-old Roy Ramsey II.

According to documents filed by police in Licking County Common Pleas Court, a female heard Hayes and Ramsey yelling and when she went downstairs, she saw Hayes on the floor.

Police said she and Ramsey took Hayes to the bathtub and when he did not regain consciousness, she called 911.

That is when police said Ramsey left the home.

On July 6, police said Ramsey admitted to them he argued with Hayes and punched him in the face and kidneys.

Ramsey is charged with murder and he could face additional charges, according to police.

He remains in custody at the Licking County Justice Center.
