COLUMBUS, Ohio — One person was hospitalized after a building caught fire in Hardin County late Friday night, according to the Kenton Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of East Columbus Street in Kenton just before midnight for a structure fire. When they arrived, first responders reported seeing heavy smoke and fire coming from the sides of a second-floor apartment.

Crews were initially told that there were four occupants possibly trapped, but were later informed that there was just one occupant, according to a Facebook post from the department.

When firefighters entered the building they observed heavy fire at the staircase leading to the second floor, the department said.

Mt. Victory and Kenton firefighters headed up the stairs and found a victim in the bathroom. The person was still conscious and was carried to the sidewalk outside before being taken to the hospital.

First responders returned to the second floor where they continued a search and fire suppression. No other victims were found.

The person’s condition is unknown at this time. They remain at the hospital.
