1 dead after crashing into west Columbus quarry

According to Geitter, the person was traveling on West 5th Avenue when they drove straight through McKinley Avenue and dropped 50 feet into the quarry.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man is dead after crashing a car into a quarry in west Columbus on Friday.

According to Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Geitter, 86-year-old Roderick Matheson was traveling on West 5th Avenue around 7:30 p.m. when he drove straight through the McKinley Avenue intersection, vaulted up and over an embankment, flipped onto his top, fell down a cliff and into the quarry.

Matheson was taken to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in critical condition, where he pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m.

It's unclear what caused the driver to crash into the quarry.
