Countdown to camp: Picking the right summer camp for your kids

The countdown to camp is on, and while we still have a couple months left of winter, many parents know now is the time to get moving.

The countdown to camp is on, and while we still have a couple months left of winter, many parents know now is the time to get moving.

Summer camps fill up fast, but how do you pick the right camp for your kid?

10TV reached out to the City of Dublin and Columbus. They tell us art, cooking, nature, science, safety, theater and sports are just a few of the hot camps for kids this year.

But you can’t forget about field trips and spending time at the pool.

The City of Dublin also tells 10TV that classic recreation camps are still among the many favorites.

But one thing some camps are starting to focus on is creating a learning environment in a camp-like atmosphere.

“One of the big things we really focus on is the social, emotional and mental development of our children. They have this social development in school because they’re in a classroom with their classmates throughout the day. We want that to continue, but we want it to continue in a fun, recreational atmosphere,” says Heath Gorden, preschool youth program supervisor for the City of Dublin.

So how can you start planning now for later? Many camps start sending out information as early as this month. Sign up for email lists to get all the camp information sent to you.

Also, registration for many camps open as early as next month. So make your decision early and sign your kids up when the registration window opens to guarantee you get a spot.

A lot of camps offer different programs for kids as young as three and as old as 17. So before you sign your kids up, make sure the age group is appropriate.
