The family and friends of a 21-year-old mother of two who died last week is calling for change.
Brittany Jeffers, 21, was declared brain-dead last week after being beaten during a brawl a day earlier.
Police say the argument stemmed from an attempted burglary report at a neighbor's house. Loved ones say Jeffers was beaten and stomped for no reason.
On Sunday, nearly 100 family members, friends and neighbors joined together for a peace march that stretched from the south Circleville neighborhood where Jeffers was allegedly beaten to the police department headquarters about a mile away.
Group members said they wanted to band together to show how the community needs to come together to prevent something like Jeffers’ death from happening again.
“Law-abiding citizens are no longer going to stand back and let criminals run this city into the ground,” said Gerald Young, Jeffers’ friend.
Many of those who attended the Sunday march said they plan to start a block watch in the neighborhood where Jeffers was beaten.
Funeral arrangements for the young mother have not yet been released.
Cameron Eby, 20, Nicole Leasure, 37, and Brandon Bolin, 17, are charged with aggravated rioting in connection with the beating.
Keely Marin, Leasure’s daughter, is charged with rioting.
Leasure and Eby were jailed on $500,000 bond each last week. The two minor were being held until their next court hearing – the date of which was not immediately released.
