Columbus police officer charged with 9 counts of dereliction of duty

Police said they were notified Thursday by the Columbus City Attorney’s Office that charges were filed against Officer Connie Brant.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An officer with the Columbus Division of Police is facing multiple counts of dereliction of duty.

Police said they were notified Thursday by the Columbus City Attorney’s Office that charges were filed against Officer Connie Brant.

The nine charges filed against Brant were the result of an internal investigation completed at the direction of Police Chief Elaine Bryant, according to police.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Brant is accused of having incomplete investigations involving eight aggravated vehicular assault cases and one vehicular manslaughter case from 2016.

Brant has been with the division for 24 years and for the past nine years has been assigned to the Accident Investigation Unit. Brant had been relieved of duty since early October 2022.

Police said Internal Affairs has begun an administrative investigation into Brant since criminal charges have been filed.

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein sent the following statement to 10TV:

“Every elected official and public servant should be held to the highest standard of conduct, and any breach of the public’s trust should be investigated, and if warranted, prosecuted. The Division of Police completed a criminal investigation into Officer Brant’s actions and, after consultation with the City Attorney’s Office, determined criminal charges for dereliction of duty would be filed. Officer Brant will be given the same due process as any other citizen, but make no mistake—no one is above the law, and the residents of Columbus deserve public servants that come to work on their behalf every single day.”
