Employee, graduate student among 3 arrested during protest at Ohio State

The three people were charged with criminal trespass.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three people were arrested during a protest over the Israel-Hamas war at Ohio State on Thursday.

According to university spokesperson Ben Johnson, an encampment was set up near the student union center this morning. He did not say what the protest was for, but social media posts indicate that plans for an encampment was planned at the South Oval in support of Palestine.

The three people, a university employee, a graduate student and someone not affiliated with the university, were charged with criminal trespass.

Johnson said university policy "prohibits camping and requires a space reservation for gatherings."

The three people were issued multiple warnings to leave before they were arrested, Johnson said.

This latest gathering comes after two people were arrested during a protest on campus on Tuesday. About 50 protesters had gathered at a campus amphitheater to share stories about their connections to the Palestinian people before marching.

While stopping at a building on the university’s medical campus, two individuals became “disruptive,” Johnson said. Per university policy, the students who were arrested will be referred to the student conduct office. They were also charged with criminal trespass.

Thursday's demonstration is one of dozens across college campuses this week. More than 100 protestors have been arrested at Columbia University in New York. Protests have also popped up at the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and the University of Minnesota.
