COLUMBUS, Ohio - Pedestrians caught jaywalking in downtown Columbus could soon face a hefty fine.
Columbus Police and the Franklin County Safe Communities' Area Pedestrian Safety Task Force are joining forces to enhance pedestrian and motorist safety.
Starting Monday, downtown workers and residents will see an increased number of traffic bureau officers at major intersections enforcing pedestrian violations.
Daniel Montaez admits he's guilty of jaywalking.
"I guess the hunger kicked in, I saw the light turn but just kind of ran through but it was turning red," he said.
Montaez is visiting from California where jaywalking is not only illegal but also highly enforced.
"I have friends who have recieved tickets from jaywalking," he said.
That is about to become reality in Columbus.
Todd Hudnall often takes his dog Oskar for walks in the Short North and admits he is guilty of jaywalking.
Hudnall said he wasn't aware of the increased enforcement.
"It's probably a good safety precaution to make sure people don't get hit they're always alert and watching," he said.
Columbus Police said pedestrians should take this enforcement very seriously.
In 2012, there were 24 pedestrians struck and 10 were killed. In 2013, 5 people were killed.
A jaywalking ticket could cost $100. Repeat violators could also face jail time.
