Ohio may be enjoying above average temperatures now, but there are already signs of a cold blast this winter. Scientists say global weather patterns are shifting unusually early this year meaning the Polar Vortex could bring us bitter temperatures this January.

The map below shows the cold blast that hit Ohio in 2014. Temperatures plunged below zero with brutal wind chills to -30.

A recent study finds high snow cover over Eurasia and Arctic sea-ice loss causing the Polar Vortex to weaken. When this happens, a piece of the polar vortex can shift south bringing Arctic air into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.

A study published in the journal Nature also finds a trend with the polar vortex shifting later in the winter. This means colder days possible in February and March.
