Skywatch: A change in the season this week

Spring officially begins this weekend and the moon will make planet hunting a little easier early in the week.

You’ll be able to find a trio of nighttime wonders in the sky early this week. Venus and Mercury will be joined by the waxing crescent moon on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The three will be in the west shortly after sunset with the moon getting a little higher in the sky each evening. Above is how the sky will look on Sunday night.

Equinox

We bid farewell to a season this week as well. At 12:15 P.M. on Tuesday the sun will be directly overhead at the equator.

This is known as the vernal or spring equinox. You may have heard the term “equal day, equal night” applied to this day but that’s not entirely accurate.

Our latitude affects our day length and on the 20th we’ll see 12 hours 8 minutes and 41 seconds of daylight according to www.timeanddate.com.

According to it our equinox will be a few days earlier on the 17th when we see 12 hours and 44 seconds of daylight.

First%20Quarter

The moon will brighten through the week and reach First Quarter Phase on Saturday at 11:35 in the morning. Look for the half moon if you’re out on Saturday night and skies are clear. Happy hunting!
