Q&A: What You Need To Know About Columbus’ New Area Code 380

Starting January 30, you will have to dial 10 numbers if you have a 614 number. Here’s the 411 on 380.

There are some new digits in town.  Next month, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) will roll out the newest area code to areas already served by the beloved 614.  But starting January 30, you will have to dial 10 numbers if you have a 614 number.

Here’s the 411 on 380:

I have a 614 area code now, will that number change?

No, the new code only applies to new lines after February 27.  PUCO says after that date, new lines or systems “may be” assigned to 380.

Who does this affect?

Only those who have a 614 area code now.

Why do I have to dial 10 numbers even though the 380 code isn’t  out until February?

PUCO wants you to get used to dialing 10 numbers for local calls before the rollout

What do I have to do when calling a 380 number?

Just add the area code before the number.  You can also add a 1+area code, then the number.

Example: 380-555-5555 or 1-380-555-5555

Does this mean I have to dial the area code when calling a 614 number, too?

Yes.  If you normally just use seven numbers to call (ex. 555-5555) you’ll have to add either 614 or 380 before the number.

So now I have to update all of my local contacts?

If you have a 614 number now, yes.  Remember to update things like fax machines, alarm systems, voicemail, speed dials, etc.  All you need to do is just add the area code in front of the number.

Will I have to pay extra?

No.  The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.  Any local call now will still remain a local call despite the new area code.

Why 380?

We're running out of 614 numbers!  Plus, they both add up to 11 -- that's cool, right?

Now I’m confused
