A serial rapist who police said terrorized a Columbus neighborhood for seven years said onFriday that he wants released from prison early.

Dr. Edward Jackson, known as the "Grandview Rapist," was convicted in 1983 of raping 36women, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

Jackson was sentenced to at least 282 years in prison.

His most recent request for parole, two years ago, was denied.

Jackson has asked Gov. John Kasich to commute his sentence, arguing that it was excessive.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien has written the parole board, urging them to denyJackson's request.

"I'm not trying to either suggest that the parole board would recommend his release, or that thegovernor would grant that, but on more than one occasion I've seen cases that kind of slip throughthe cracks and I wanted to make sure this one didn't," O'Brien said.

After his arrest in 1982, investigators found index cards inside Jackson's car that listed thenames of his victims.

Jackson testified at his trial and claimed he was not guilty by reason of insanity.

"I am quite sure that his 30-plus victims don't think the sentence was excessive," O'Brien said."And secondly, that it's hard to find another case like his that you could compare it to so as tosay his sentence was disparate."

O'Brien wants any of Jackson's victims to contact his office or the Ohio Parole Board directlyto have their voices heard on Jackson's request.
