'This is a travesty': Whitehall school employees frustrated after Board of Education rejects superintendent's contract

The Whitehall Board of Education voted 3-2 to reject the renewal of Dr. Sharee Wells’ contract.

WHITEHALL, Ohio — There is confusion and frustration in the Whitehall City Schools district after the Board of Education voted not to renew the superintendent’s contract.

The vote happened on Dec. 14 when the board publicly voted 3-2 to reject Dr. Sharee Wells’ contract renewal.

District employees told 10TV the news came as a complete shock.

“No one has said anything in respects to why,” said board member-elect Loerna Lacey.

In a letter sent to district employees, Dr. Wells stated, “I really would love the opportunity to continue this great work and hope the whole board, and I can discuss how we can avert Thursday’s decision and move forward together to continue to benefit our children, the staff, and this community.”

Employees that 10TV spoke to weren’t told as to why Dr. Wells's contract was rejected.

“That is a travesty. It lacks transparency, it lacks accountability. And I’m not going to stand for it,” said Lacey.

During Wednesday’s special board meeting, Dr. Wells was not in attendance. The board voted to allow their attorney to continue the discussion with Dr. Wells over the contract and options.

Board member Jayne Shannon said to the public after the meeting adjourned, “Have some faith, everything will work out.”

Lacey said there are a lot of employees who will support Dr. Wells throughout the process.

“The community is behind Dr. Wells 100%.”
