Zora's House receives $5 million in funding for major move and makeover

The goal of Zora's House was to activate women of color in their leadership, creativity, scholarship, entrepreneurship and activism.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Researchers say the world of work can be challenging and lonely and less connected for Black women.

They make up less than 10% of the U.S. population, but they are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs — according to both private and public sector business researchers.

Black women and other women of color can find a "home" in Columbus at Zora's House. LC Johnson, its founder and CEO, and her husband used their savings to create and open the community space in 2018.

The goal was to activate women of color in their leadership, creativity, scholarship, entrepreneurship and activism.

Johnson said Zora’s House is a space that goes beyond incubators that only work for business owners.

“We have folks finishing their Ph.Ds. We do have entrepreneurs, people who work 9 to 5 corporate jobs,” she said. “What they have in common is: One, they all have a mission to do something with their lives and two, many of them navigate spaces every day where they may be one of or the only woman of color on their team or the spaces they're in. "

Construction is underway on a new 10,000-square-foot location in Weinland Park.  The $5 million project includes federal, state, and local funding and corporate and community partners.
