Southeast Columbus residents call for change after man shot, killed near after-hours club

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 39-year-old Dante Gamble suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police said around 5:20 a.m. Sunday, there were reports of a shooting near the 1300 block of Beechwood Road in southeast Columbus.

When officers arrived, they found 39-year-old Dante Gamble suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital.

Columbus police said Gamble was leaving an after-hours club and was in the parking lot, appearing to prepare to leave, when he was hit by gunfire.

A woman who lives in the area said she never thought gunfire would be a normal sound outside.

“It’s not comforting to hear gunshots more than fireworks. Way more often,” she said.

The woman feels the club has brought some trouble to the area.

“The crowd that’s coming there, they get rowdy at homes. It's stemming into this neighborhood area rather than keeping it sanctioned off,” she said.

10TV spoke to another woman who lives in the area who wants to stay anonymous for her safety.

“It’s a little scary as a mom of kids it's like 'why?' We would like to have our kids outside in the summer but now it's like you have to fear about what could happen during the day,” she said.

The violence is pushing her and her family out of southeast Columbus.

“I’m in the process of moving because where areas like this become this way, we just have to do what’s best for our kids and family,” she said.

Both of the women said they want change in the area.

“I think shutting down the nightclub or relocating it would be an option that would be beneficial. I think having a larger police presence in the area too, at least until time passes."

“The police have to be more involved in the area. When things happen, the truth is we don’t see any police around, only until someone calls."
