Sister of 13-year-old killed in weekend shooting urging others to put down the guns

On Friday, Dec. 1, Columbus police say Tauron Durham, along with two other people including one other juvenile, were found shot in the 700 block of Stelzer Road.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tauron Durham was the 13-year-old who died after a shooting in Columbus last Friday.

"He was a dancer that's where he got the name Bop from,” said his older sister, Tylaesha Durham.

She said at his young age, he played such an important role in his family, taking care of his nieces, nephews and cousins.

On Friday, Dec. 1, Columbus police say he, along with two other people including one other juvenile, were found shot in the 700 block of Stelzer Road.

Medics pronounced one of the victims dead on scene. Tauron and the other juvenile were taken to a nearby hospital. His sister said she and other family members rushed to be with him.

After a while, she started to leave thinking he was going to push through.

“I got to go head and get home because I had work the next morning and not even 30 minutes later I got that call that he passed,” said Tylaesha.

He died just before 1 a.m. Police said it is unclear what led up to the shooting and no suspect information has been released.

"That call really broke my heart, I’ve never lost a sibling,” she said.

Tylaesha is urging that people stop this senseless violence. Because now instead of getting ready for the holidays, their family is preparing for a funeral.

"It's not a good choice that you want to make to turn to gun violence when you have an altercation with someone or whatever the case is,” said Tylaesha.

The family has created a GoFundMe to help with the unexpected funeral expenses.
