CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – A man accused of violently shaking a friend’s baby is now facing an attempted murder charge, according to the Ross County Sheriff’s Office.

Captain Mike Preston with the sheriff's office confirmed deputies were called to a home on Toad Hollow Road around 7 p.m. on Friday for a report of an injured infant.

Preston said a 5-month-old baby was taken to Adena Medical Center before being taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Witnesses told deputies someone handed the baby to 21-year-old Matthew Vulgamore of Chillicothe and he started shaking the child about a minute later.

"We consulted with the prosecutor at the time," Preston told the Chillicothe Gazette. "Based on what (information) we had at the time, we revised the charge to attempted murder."

Preston said it does not appear the baby has any injuries and is expected to be OK.
