The Future Of Shopping: Kroger Tests Digital Price Tags

The tags can play videos and alert you if you are passing an item on your shopping list.

Take your mundane, every-day grocery shopping trip and blast it into the future.

Kroger is testing out a new way to streamline your shopping trip.

At a glance, you may not notice the new price tags. They look like paper, but they are actually experimental high-resolution grocery shelf labels. They can play video, and they may even let you know when you're passing that exact item you're hunting for, or remind you not to forget something you usually get.

Alex Swogger, of Hilliard, has never heard of the digital tags before.

"I think it's really interesting," she says. "I've never heard of it before, I think it's really interesting."

Swogger hopes to try it out, and she isn't alone. Other shoppers are ready to upload if Kroger launches the digital technology to connect them to the store's shopping app for your phone.

Nishelle Golden, of Columbus, says it would be a helpful tool.

"(It's) something I would use. It's very creative; it helps guide me through the right path. Get in and out quickly," she says.

Grocers like Giant Eagle and Walmart tell 10TV they're looking to streamline shopping, too, but not with the digital shelves. The only place to find that at this point is the testing location in the Cincinnati-area.

"I say bring it here," Swogger said. "They always test stuff in Columbus because we have a pretty diverse population. I think we'd be a great test market for it."
