Westerville school board names interim superintendent

Joseph Clark will now serve as an advisor to the interim superintendent through July 31.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — A special meeting was held Thursday night by the Westerville Board of Education to determine who they would appoint as the district’s interim superintendent.

The school board named Angela Hamberg to serve as interim superintendent for the remainder of the school year. School board members spent more than three hours in executive session before making this decision.

This decision comes after the board approved the resignation of its current superintendent, Joseph Clark, earlier this week. However, Clark was supposed to finish out the school year with his contract officially ending in July. It's unclear why the board has made this decision to appoint an interim superintendent.

Angela Hamberg currently serves as a High Quality Instructional Materials Specialist and Certified Executive Leadership Coach for the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio. She most recently served as superintendent of Big Walnut Local Schools from June 2015 through July 2022.

Hamberg’s start date and compensation have yet to be determined. This decision is pending approval until negotiations between the board and Hamberg are made.

Clark will now serve as an advisor to Hamberg and will assist in the transition of administrative and operational duties through July 31, the effective date of his resignation.

The board declined to comment about what led to this decision out of respect for Clark’s privacy.
