Former UA gym teacher indicted in rape case takes plea deal to lessen charges

Joel Culter pleaded guilty to one count of felony child endangerment - a third-degree felony.

LONDON, Ohio — A former Upper Arlington elementary school gym teacher who was facing several sexual assault charges involving a student has entered a plea agreement.

Joel Cutler appeared in Madison County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday. He was indicted on two counts of rape, four counts of sexual battery and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

As part of the agreement, Culter pleaded guilty to one count of felony child endangerment - a third-degree felony. In exchange, the charges of rape, sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor were dropped.

He will not be required to register as a sex offender.

Culter was charged while he was a physical education teacher at Greensview Elementary School at Upper Arlington Schools. He was a teacher there for several years and a coach in the district.

The alleged activities happened with a student between 2000 and 2003, but the incidents were reported to authorities in 2021.

Cutler will be sentenced at a later date. He could spend up to three years in prison or probation.
