Unmarked police vehicle stolen while detective was on break in south Columbus

Police say no guns or bulletproof vests were inside the car when it was stolen, but a gun belt, laptop and other city issued property were listed as stolen.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An unmarked Columbus Division of Police vehicle was stolen while a detective was on break at a restaurant on the south side Wednesday night.

Police say the Hyundai Elantra was reportedly locked and in the parking lot at Skyline Chili on South High Street at the time it was stolen. 

According to a preliminary investigation, surveillance video shows three suspect approach the car. One of the suspects allegedly breaks the driver side window with what appears to be a screwdriver. 

The report says the suspect is them seen climbing through the window and driving away.

The car was recovered Thursday afternoon on South Oakley Avenue in the Hilltop neighborhood.

According to police, no guns or bulletproof vests were inside the car when it was stolen, but a gun belt, laptop and other city issued property were listed as stolen.

No arrests have been made.
