Short North sneaker store broken into hours after Christmas

614Sneaker owner Brody Smith said around $4,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Short North sneaker store was broken into and thousands of dollars worth of merchandise was stolen the day after Christmas.

It happened at 614Sneaker on North High Street on Dec. 26, just before 2:30 a.m.

"It sucks that we live in such a sinful world where, you know, people can do this,” said Brody Smith, the owner of the store.

He opened it five months ago at 22 years old. His passion is selling shoes and connecting with customers.

"I have some great interactions with customers, I have some bad interactions with customers of course,” he said.

Surveillance video captured the moments when two men are seen smashing the front door window in with rocks. A few moments later, one is seen running inside and snatching hoodies off a rack.

Smith said they stole around $4,000 worth of merchandise.

He said he got a notification on his phone about a break-in. Once he got to the store, he saw several police cruisers.

"I was just confused, scared, sad,” he said.

Smith believes he knows who broke into the store, saying he recognized the individuals.

“They were in here a week prior looking at the hoodies, so we actually had a screen recording of them when they were in here,” said Smith.

Since the break-in, he’s added a security gate to use once the store closes. He wants this to serve as a warning to other small business owners to always keep a watchful eye.

"Stuff happens for a reason, don't let something small mess up your overall goal,” said Smith.

10TV has reached out to Columbus police for more information but have not yet heard back.
