COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus man died after he was severely beaten last month and authorities arrested a suspect in his death.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court documents, on April 15, officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called out to an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Refugee Road for a report of a person being assaulted. Arriving officers found a man, later identified as 36-year-old Eugene McGuire Jr., suffering from an "obvious" head injury.

Officers reported finding McGuire lying in a pool of his own blood and having what appeared to be a seizure. He was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition.

Two witnesses identified 56-year-old Derek Jackson as the suspect. One of the witnesses stated that Jackson stomped and kicked McGuire in the head, records say.

Jackson was arrested on May 9 and McGuire died six days later. Jackson is currently charged with felonious assault but additional charges may be filed at a later date, police say.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Columbus Police Detective Camp-Donovan at 614-645-2557, the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
