3rd Suspect In Store Clerk's Murder Held On $400,000 Bond

A judge set a $400,000 bond for the third man accused in connection with the murder of a convenience store clerk.

A third suspect in the death of a convenience store clerk on the city's south side appeared in court on Monday.

Darrell Durham, 18, was named as a suspect on Saturday and turned himself into police at a church on Sunday nearly 12 hours after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He told authorities that he had nothing to do with the crime and only heard that police were looking for him.

Durham is accused in the killing of Imran Ashgar.

Ashgar was shot and killed on July 24 inside of the Convenient Plus Food Mart on East Livingston Avenue.

Police earlier arrested Devonere Simmonds and Nathaniel Brunner in connection with the murder. The two were arrested in Dayton.

In court on Monday, officials said that Durham entered the store after Simmonds and Brunner.

“Mr. Durham went up to the counter and looked over the victim as he lay dying on the floor. Then Mr. Durham spoke to Mr. Simmonds, who walked up and shot the victim again,” said a clerk in court.

Durham’s mother, Lisa Durham, spoke in court Monday morning to defend her son.

“He was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and justice will prevail, I believe, because if he didn’t do it, he wasn’t going to run. He’s turned himself in,” Lisa Durham said.

Police also have accused Simmonds and Brunner in the shooting of a man at a Madison County gas station. The two teens are now also charged with murder in connection with the July 25 shooting death of 17-year-old Lamont Fraizer.

On Monday, a judge set a $400,000 bond for Durham.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21.
