AEP Offers Rebates To Customers Who Replace Old Appliances With Energy-Efficient Ones

AEP expands its experimental rebate program in which the company rebated 12,000 appliances in just a few months. Learn more.

AEP is expanding its experimental rebate program that pays customers for buying new, energy-efficient appliances, Consumer 10’s Kurt Ludlow reported Monday.

AEP first tried the rebate program last year and issued 12,000 rebates within a few months.

The company said that it wanted to encourage customers to consider new appliances because the electricity they use can account for a large part of an electricity bill.

“It also helps our customers save on their energy usage, save on their energy bills, while helping them take part in protecting the environment by preserving some of our natural resources,” said Michele Kowalik of AEP.

Kowalik said that many of today’s energy-efficient refrigerators use less than half the amount of energy than a model 12 years old.

Montey Elkins of Lowes stores said that looking at Energy Star labels can help save customers money, Ludlow reported.

“When you’re looking at the Energy Star card, it’s going to tell you that it will be right around $50 a year to actually run this unit, so that is going to save quite a bit of money for what your old refrigerator is going to use, as well,” Elkins said.

According to AEP, customers can receive $25 for replacing humidifiers, $50 for clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators and electric water heaters and $300 for electric heat pump water heaters.

Customers also can get a $50 rebate when they recycle their old refrigerator or freezer. It must be in working order. AEP will pick it up for free, Ludlow reported.
