New Albany Symphony Orchestra welcomes special guest Branford Marsalis

The concert with world-renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis is on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Center in New Albany.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The New Albany Symphony Orchestra is welcoming a special guest for the final concert of their season.

World-renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis will join the symphony on stage at the McCoy Center in New Albany for a one-night-only performance.

In addition to performance and composition, the jazz icon is a dedicated educator and calls the decline in public music education programs “tragic.” He stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of quality music education for all students.

“The thing that I love about music is that, learning music, it’s applicable in everything,” said Marsalis. “For instance, in the highest levels of mathematics and science are spatial...numbers don’t really exist; the whole thing is aethereal. But, you play music when you’re seven, almost everything you learn – pitch? Aethereal. Playing with others? There’s no physical manifestation for that. Playing in tune? There’s no physical manifestation for that. As you develop and matriculate upward in school, advanced mathematics is less-problematic for people with music backgrounds than it is for other people. So, I mean, music is a beautiful thing; it can take you to a lot of places.”

Also at the concert, the New Albany Symphony Orchestra is set to unveil the lineup for their upcoming 2024-25 season and 10TV was given an advance look:
