Alvis: Turning lives around for 50 years

Published:

Alvis’ anniversary is a point of pride on many levels but we are most proud of what our services have meant to the individuals and families who have turned to Alvis for help over the past 50 years.

Fewer than 60 men went through the Alvis program in its first year of existence. Today, Alvis provides direct services to nearly 8,000 men, women, youth, and children each year in Columbus, Dayton, Chillicothe, Lima and Toledo.

Since Alvis was founded in 1967, the agency has turned around the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. This anniversary is more than a milestone; it’s a collection of life stories made better because of Alvis.

One of the areas where Alvis is a leader is our Family and Children’s Program. This program provides family-focused services designed to break the cycle of family trauma created when a parent has become involved in the criminal justice system. In Ohio, there are more than 55,000 children who have a parent in the criminal justice system. Babies and toddlers make up one-fourth of those children. All of these children are the invisible victims of the criminal justice system. And while people make mistakes, their children shouldn't have to pay the price.

Fortunately, the Alvis Family and Children’s Program is here to help heal families. This program strengthens families through educational classes and hands-on practice to improve parenting skills, enhance coping abilities and build healthier relationships.

It takes time to overcome the trauma and separation of having a justice-involved parent, which is why our family activities are designed to rebuild trust. These activities provide clients and their children the chance to spend time together in a healthy environment that encourages communication and strengthens family bonds. In the two and a half years since the Alvis Family and Children’s Program began, nearly 400 children have been able to reconnect with a parent.

That’s good for each family—and it’s good for all of us. After all, stronger families mean stronger, safer communities.

Across every program and in every location we offer services, Alvis is committed to excellence and quality care to the individuals, families and communities we serve. Our vision is that communities believe each person's potential is more important than their past. Our mission is to innovate and deliver evidence-based human service programs that empower those we serve to build successful and productive lives. Our service lines are:

  • Community and residential reentry programs for individuals and families with criminal justice involvement,
  • Community recovery services providing treatment for substance abuse as well as supportive housing, and
  • Programs for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities that promote independence and growth.

Since 1967, Alvis has adapted to meet the evolving needs of our clients, their families and of our communities as a whole. But the guiding principle on which Alvis was founded remains unchanged. We have always believed that if given the proper support and tools to do so, people can and will turn their lives around.
