Capital University to change Crusader nickname, mascot

The university says students, alumni, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to participate in the selection process.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Board of Trustees for Capital University has approved a resolution to retire and change the university's nickname and mascot.

In a statement issued Monday, the board's vote followed a 15-month study and discussion on the Crusaders nickname and the mascot Cappy.

"We believe that the University nickname and mascot should be a unifying symbol that enhances school spirit and pride for all who are affiliated with Capital. In recent years, our nickname has been challenged by students and faculty for its connection to the historic Crusades. The detailed study found a significant portion of the Capital Family shares this perspective."

The university says leadership will create a schedule for exploration and transition to a new nickname and mascot but in the meantime, will continue to be the Crusaders.

Students, alumni, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to participate in the process.
