Woman killed, officer injured in police-involved shooting in west Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Aug. 23 in west Columbus.

Officers were called around 11:30 a.m. to the intersection of Bellows Avenue and S. Yale Avenue on the report of an officer in trouble.

The undercover officer, who was in the area working prostitution complaints, attempted to take a female suspect into custody inside his unmarked vehicle when an altercation occurred.

The officer was identified as Andrew Mitchell, a 30-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police. Mitchell is a member of the Vice Unit.

Additional officers responding to the scene. Upon arrival, they found Mitchell had been injured and the suspect had been shot.

Police said Mitchell had been stabbed in the hand and he fired his gun multiple times inside the vehicle.

Mitchell's wound was so severe that another officer used a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

He was taken to Grant Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Police said Mitchell will not return to duty until he is medically cleared and undergoes a mandatory psychological assessment.

The suspect was taken to Grant Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. She was later identified as 23-year-old Donna G. Castleberry.

Police said a knife was recovered at the scene.
