Will Smith pays tribute to Robin Williams

(WTHR) — Taking on an iconic role is never easy, especially when fans have such an emotional connection to not only the character but the actor who originally portrayed him.

I know Genies don’t have Feet... But you left some Big Shoes to fill. 😊 R.I.P., Robin! And Thank You, @helloluigi Love the art work!

"I know Genies don't have Feet... But you left some Big Shoes to fill," actor Will Smith said in an Instagram post this week honoring Robin Williams who played Aladdin's genie in the animated film. "R.I.P., Robin! And Thank You, @helloluigi Love the art work!" he added, also giving credit to artist Luigi Lucarelli.

Smith took on the role for the live action remake of the movie, due out May 24.

In a December interview with EW, he said taking on something so iconic is "always terrifying," but "I saw where Robin Williams infused the character with a timeless version of himself, so I said to myself, 'What if I just infuse the character with a timeless version of myself?' And then that opened up for me… hip-hop, it opened up fashion. Because the Genie is timeless, you get to really say and do anything so I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Willians but was musically different and just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane versus trying to compete."
