National Weather Service starts new alert warning next month

The National Weather Service will start issuing a new Wireless Emergency Alert to your phone during times of "destructive" severe weather on Aug. 2.

Starting on Aug. 2, the National Weather Service will start issuing a new Wireless Emergency Alert to your phone during times of "destructive" severe weather.

This category is not for your average, summer-time thunderstorm or even a severe thunderstorm warning but for those extreme events.

The criteria for “destructive” conditions is at least 2.75-inch diameter, or baseball-sized hail and 80 mph winds.

Currently, the only alert you could see from the National Weather Service is for a Tornado Warning or a threatening Flood Event.

A Destructive Severe Thunderstorm Warning would be the newest alert to your phone when circumstances meet that criteria.

This is in hopes to better prepare people before severe weather strikes.
