Police said during the investigation they found a person inside the home may have mishandled the firearm, causing it to unintentionally fire, striking Porter in the chest.

Wednesday morning, police said they arrested 19-year-old Eric Lamar Smith-Ross. Police said he was a visitor in the home at the time and he allegedly discharged the firearm. The circumstances of the shooting still are under investigation.

Smith-Ross has been charged with having weapons under disability. Police say this charge is a separate offense in connection with the death of Porter. Additional charges are pending.

This is the 82nd homicide in the City of Columbus in 2018.
